This painting was a commission for one of my cousins and it's particularly close to my heart. It's a picture of Charley's Market in Ashby, Nebraska, where I grew up.
A little history:
The building that housed what would eventually become my father's grocery store was built in 1929 and was always a grocery store (until recently). My Great Grandma and her father both worked there. It was then purchased by a co-op--a group of local ranchers. My Grandpa began working there around 1958 and bought the business from the co-op in 1961. My Dad started working with my Grandpa in 1979. They had a partnership deal until 1981 when my Dad bought out Grandpa's share. My Dad owned the store until 2002 (when I was 15), at which time he sold it and we moved away. It remained a grocery store for a few years and is now a feed and ranch supply store.
Ashby, where I grew up, currently has a population of about 190, but that includes a large surrounding area of ranches. The number of people actually living in the town itself is much smaller. I had an amazing childhood in Ashby and have so many memories of spending time at the store--stocking shelves, cutting meat, cleaning, ringing up groceries, doing inventory, and just hanging out. I could never move back, but sometimes it bums me out that my daughter will never get to experience the absolute freedom that comes with being a kid in such a small town.
